Culberson Opposes HUD Project Near Overcrowded Briargrove Elementary

-

Houston, TX – January 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — After meeting with Briargrove residents, the Houston Housing Authority (HHA), Houston Independent School District (HISD) officials, and other local officials regarding a new 250-unit multi-family housing development, Representative John Culberson (TX-07) sent the attached letter to Secretary Julián Castro, Secretary, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and released the following statement.

“Mothers like Adi Martinez and Jennifer Dollinger treasure the time they get to spend with their children on their daily walk to Briargrove Elementary. But, this popular school is already at capacity with hundreds of children on a waitlist to attend. Now, a proposed new government housing development risks burdening an already over-crowded school.

“Because of the impact on Briargrove’s capacity, and lack of transparency in HHA’s selection process for the proposed development at 2640 Fountain View, I’ve asked HUD to stop all work on this project until the impact on neighborhood schools and infrastructure is thoroughly reviewed.

“In addition, I’ve asked HUD to develop a formal site selection process for future projects so that all families affected by new developments would be formally notified early during an open and transparent process.”
