Kennedy Place opens with 108 new units, Houston families have a chance for a new apartment home

HOUSTON, TX – February 1, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) will join the Houston Housing Authority as they roll out the welcome mat for more than 100 low-income families at 2:30 p.m. CT on Tuesday, February 1, at Kennedy Place, 3100 Gillespie, Houston Texas 77020. Kennedy Place is celebrating its grand opening week after being rebuilt with federal funding from the Stimulus Act, which has created thousands of jobs throughout the country while stimulating local economies, including Houston’s.

“I am pleased to join Tim Seckinger, interim CEO of the Houston Housing Authority, David Mincberg, chair of the Board of Commissioners, and the Houston Housing Authority, as well as the many families who now have a new, affordable apartment home in Houston as we celebrate the grand opening of this magnificent community thanks to the work and efforts of many Houstonians,” commented Congresswoman Jackson Lee. “The Stimulus Act, which has boosted our economy by creating more than 1.3 million jobs throughout the United States, was the driving force in building these apartment homes. We created jobs while using the latest state-of-the-art technology and energy efficient building designs. The welcome mat that we will provide to families is a symbol of innovation, unity and prosperity, and we welcome all to visit the Kennedy Place as it is open for business.”

The Houston Housing Authority received $7.8 million in federal funding from stimulus funds for this project. The entire project cost about $11.5 million.  The Houston Housing Authority razed the old rental units, which were built in 1982, and replaced them with new homes, complete with central heating, air conditioning, individual garages, wall-to-wall carpeting, washer and dryer connections, energy-efficient appliances, including dishwashers, refrigerators and microwaves along with other amenities.
