Washington, D.C. – January 19, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (TX-15) announced the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development selected the McAllen based non-profit to receive the grant funds. The grant awards are part of HUD’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program Round II (NSP II). This is the largest single awarded granted to Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. which has received a total of $7 Million under the NSP program to rebuild neighborhoods and develop affordable housing in predominately Latino and low-income communities.“This award from HUD, along with the others, is a major investment in our communities and for our residents of the Rio Grande Valley. This is part of the “Main Street” America program which strives to get people back on their feet economically and to put families into affordable homes”, said Hinojosa.

Nationally, the NSP funded $137,107,133 to Chicanos Por La Causa, the National Association for Latino Community Asset Builders and Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc. The funds will be used in eight states and the District of Columbia that have been hit by foreclosures and abandoned properties. The organizations named above will also serve predominately Hispanic/Latino communities and provide bilingual/bicultural services.

“We have already seen how well these programs work. Just last fall I visited a woman and her two young children who had just moved into a brand new beautiful home near McAllen. She had qualified for the program and had saved up enough money by working hard. She even managed to finish school and all the while succeeded in providing a nice home for her family”, said Hinojosa.
