Select Committee On Property Tax Relief And Appraisal Reform To Hold Hearings Across Texas

AUSTIN – Chairman John Otto (Dayton) announced that the Interim Select Committee on Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform will hold their first meeting on Tuesday, June 17 in Travis County. The hearing will kickoff the first of seven public hearings scheduled across the state. The 13-member committee will take invited and public testimony on the state’s Property Value Study and recommendations on how to improve the state’s current property appraisal system.

Details of the committee’s meetings are as follows, with all meeting times and locations to be determined:

Tuesday, June 17, 2008 – Travis County
Tuesday, June 24 – Hidalgo County
Tuesday, July 1 – Bexar County
Tuesday, July 8, Tarrant County
Tuesday, July 15 – Jefferson County
Tuesday, August 12 – Lubbock County
Tuesday, August 19 – Harris County

“I look forward to hearing ideas from Texans across the state as the committee considers this very important issue,” Rep. Otto said. “Rising property taxes and appraisals are of concern to many of our state’s citizens, and we must find a way to improve the current system.”

The committee members include: Vice-Chairman Ken Paxton (McKinney), Rep. Drew Darby (San Angelo), Rep. Gary Elkins (Houston), Rep. Ismael “Kino” Flores (Palmview), Rep. Dan Flynn (Van), Rep. Dan Gattis (Georgetown), Rep. Joe Heflin (Crosbyton), Rep. Phil King (Weatherford), Rep. Tracy King (Batesville), Rep. Ruth Jones McClendon (San Antonio), Rep. Inocente “Chente” Quintanilla (Tornillo) and Rep. Larry Taylor (Friendswood).
