AUSTIN, TX – July 18, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) today announced a series of major funding awards designed to help homeless Texans secure permanent housing and strive toward self-sufficiency, bringing greater stability to individuals and the communities in which they live.TDHCA awarded a total of $4.9 million in federal funds to 44 nonprofit organizations renovating or converting buildings for use as emergency shelters, as well as to help provide an array of essential services to homeless individuals.
“Despite the fact that the state’s economy continues to outperform that of the rest of the country, far too many Texans are on the brink of homelessness or are already homeless,” said Timothy Irvine, TDHCA Acting Executive Director.
“Worse, we are seeing greater numbers of single mothers and children in shelters or on the streets,” he continued, “a situation that we simply should not tolerate. The awards THDCA announced today will work to reduce these numbers and begin to restore stability and self-sufficiency to the lives of thousands of Texans who lack a permanent home.”
The grants were made through TDHCA’s 2011 Emergency Shelter Grants Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In addition to converting or renovating buildings for use as shelters, eligible activities include assisting homeless persons obtain permanent housing; providing medical, nutritional and psychological counseling, substance abuse treatment, transportation and job training; and the development and implementation of homelessness prevention activities.
While figures vary, the Texas Interagency Council for the Homeless estimates that 80,000 Texans are homeless on any given day and 265,000 Texans experience homelessness over the course of a year.
