WASHINGTON, DC – October 16, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — The city of Killeen has been awarded two grants totaling $1,453,317 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, Congressman John Carter (TX-31) announced today. “Both of these grants will allow the city to develop its community, provide economic opportunities, and provide for moderate- and low-income families,” Carter said. “The funds will help meet the needs of this growing city.”

The city was granted $964,861 as part of the Community Development Block Grant program and $488,456 from the HOME initiative.

Killeen’s population has grown about 35 percent to 117,000 since 2000, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The CDBG program is meant to assist primarily low- and moderate-income families. Funds can be used for acquisition of property, relocation, rehabilitation residential and non-residential structures, construction of public facilities, and energy conservation.

The HOME program also helps expand affordable housing options to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to fund the housing programs. Each year, it allocates $2 billion among states and cities across the nation.
