Texas Home Recognized in National Design Competition

Washington, D.C. – January 22, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — Pine Creek Place, a 1970s-era home in Fredericksburg, Texas, has been selected as the South Central regional winner in 2015 Best in American Living Awards (BALA) by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). The home also received the 2015 BALA for Remodel of the Year.

Fredericksburg-based Laughlin Homes & Restoration, Inc. did both the design and renovation work for the home. Land planning was done by Land-flow, also of Fredericksburg.

The design-build team created spaces to address the family’s need for a larger home, transforming a once-cramped layout into an inviting, open floorplan more suitable for entertaining. It also emphasized the need to maintain the home’s original character by designing additions to blend, rather than contrast, with the surrounding historic neighborhood.

Simple in design, the home is now flooded with natural light. One of its most eye-catching features is the veranda stairway that includes a hand-wrought steel railing that stands prominently against the backdrop of repurposed weathered oak. A salvaged cast-iron grate was inlaid into the wooden stair landing and lit from the underside, while the entire stairway is warmly lit with solid bronze light fixtures imported from Egypt

The master suite features a custom-built doorway that opens to a balcony overlooking the spa and pool. The home’s reconfiguration allowed for a separate living area dedicated to the other bedroom suites. And the outdoor living space was expanded with deep porches, a fireplace and outdoor kitchen.

BALA judges commented on the home’s simplicity – maintaining its traditional-farmhouse character while combining many creative design elements. Judges applauded the home’s attention to detail that incorporates various recycled elements throughout.

In its 32nd year, BALA recognizes outstanding achievement by builders and design professionals in all sectors of the residential housing industry including single-family production, custom, rental, affordable, interiors, remodeling, community and international. Award winners were announced at the annual NAHB International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

Additional Information about the BALA program can be found at www.nahb.org/BALA, including the 2015 BALA Portfolio, featuring a review of design trends and project photographs.
