HACA Programs and Residents Receive Prestigious Housing Industry Awards

Austin, TX – May 1, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The Housing Authority of the City of Austin (HACA) is pleased to announce the receipt of 10 awards from the Texas chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (TX NAHRO) for its initiatives, modernization efforts and publications.

These coveted industry awards are a great source of pride for a public housing authority and exemplify a high level of achievement, said HACA President and CEO Michael Gerber.

“Winning is a clear indication of the strong work our agency does to provide quality housing and support programs for Austin residents,” Gerber said. “We’re not just about housing. We are about transforming lives and moving residents to self sufficiency.”

Several HACA staff, board members and residents were recognized for their exceptional accomplishments, commitment to HACA, and work in public and affordable housing:

  • Commissioner of the Year – Tyra Duncan-Hall
  • Maintenance Person of the Year – Paul Castro, lead maintenance
  • Management Person of the Year – Michael Roth, admissions director
  • Community Service Award – Barbara Jackson, YES Manager/ROSS Service Coordinator
  • Executive of the Year – Lisa Garcia, vice president of Assisted Housing
  • Resident of the Year – Rachel Martinez, Georgian Manor
  • Scholarship Winner: Ivy Tran, Eastside Memorial High School

In addition, HACA received several awards in other key areas:

  • Best Other Publication for a Large Housing Authority – Resident Calendar
  • Best Annual Report for a Large Housing Authority
  • Media Recognition – Unlocking the Connection

“We are honored to receive these awards from our peers, recognizing the amazing work HACA does each and every day to bring opportunity home for the people in our city who need it most,” said Carl Richie Jr., chairman of the HACA Board of Commissioners.

TX NAHRO is the largest association in Texas of public and affordable housing providers and community development agencies. The organization provides professional development and skills training for industry professionals, and is the Texas affiliate of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials.
