Cameron County Housing Authority Receives $539k
WASHINGTON, DC – September 25, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Rep. Solomon P. Ortiz (TX-27) announced more than $530,000 in funding to renovate public housing units in the Cameron County Housing Authority from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“Cameron County is one of 134 housing authorities that will receive funds to create energy efficient communities by rehabilitating existing public housing units,” Ortiz said. “The agency will have the option of installing energy efficient technology, such as Energy Star appliances, high-efficiency boilers/furnaces and programmable thermostats or controls. We continue to see how funding from the Recovery Act is distributed throughout the country, including South Texas.”
The Leon Gardens Housing Authority in Cameron County will receive $539,753, according to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
“The grants being awarded today should give hope to families across the country that more affordable housing opportunities are on the way,” said Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan. “This Recovery Act funding will not only give housing authorities the resources they need to jump start production of affordable housing, but it will also reduce energy costs and mitigate negative environmental impacts, while creating much-needed ‘green’ jobs across the country.”
In February, President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. At that time, HUD allocated nearly $3 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to more than 3,100 public housing authorities across the U.S.
